The marvelous folks at the Toyko Philharmonic Orchestra have pulled out the stops on their already busy schedule to play the entire soundtrack to Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, via Nipponsei.
While initially awesome, I caught myself thinking “what don’t orchestra’s play these days?”
This quickly led on to “why did they do it…” and then “meh….”
Yes it sounds great in bits, but otherwise the conversion and inclusion of so many instruments makes the music unrecognizable. The only bits that sound pretty good are the parts of the original score that were already orchestresized (is that even a word?). Aya Hirano sings along for Hare Hare Yukai as you’d expect but it just doesn’t work.
A giggle, and perhaps a good ringtone in there somewhere, but otherwise the only benefit for me is a nice new Nagato Yuki wallpaper…
