Our God is a glorious God.

One may not be able to tell just how HYPED I am right now from that opening paragraph. The fact is, there is simply not enough memes on the internets to express my overwhelming happiness and desire for these games to be released right this moment. I once told my friends that if there was a game that would force me to buy a PSV/PS3, it would be a Persona game. With my never ending postponement to play P4 on the PS2, I am overjoyed to hear that I can play the enhanced port for my first time on the PSV if I choose to.

All of Yen. TAKE IT.

I have been a long time fighting game fan and enjoy playing all types of fighters. Case in point – when Madcatz first released their Tournament Edition fightstick alongside Street Fighter 4 and there was a shortage on stock, I knew I had to have one and even payed an absurd amount over the original price to have it then and there. That is how much I love fighting games. Now, a Persona fighting game? HELL.YES. I was literally shaking from the excitement when I stumbled across the news on game news websites. The thought of Persona characters duking it out with flashy animations (a la Blazblue) and being able select the persona of choice for any given character (not confirmed yet) when fighting made me jizz uncontrollably all over my well chiselled rolls of fat.

I think that’s enough of my fanboy heavy breathing so here’s some facts I’ve gathered from the photos and online:

Persona 4 – The Golden:

• PlayStation Vita Spring 2012 release
• New character Marie/Mary
• New opening anime with new song from Shouji Meguro
• New anime cutscenes, bathing scene movie
• New opening music
• 1.5 times more voice dialogs than PS2 version
• Wi-Fi communication, allow player to request help from other players in dungeons
• New elements requested by fans, and more to be revealed in future (possibly the ability to see changes when equipped with different costume like P3)
• With the power of Vita, we can expect no cutting of the game’s mechanics like in P3P where you move a cursor instead of a 3D protag on the maps (not confirmed but screenshots indicate this).

Persona 4 – The Ultimate in Mayonaka:

• Atlus is teaming up with Arc System Works
• 2D fighter
• Released first for arcades in Spring 2012
• Released for PS3 and Xbox 360 in Summer 2012
• Takes place 2 months after the events of Persona 4
• 6 characters shown on the character select screen:

Persona 5:

Famitsu also has a few preliminary details on the next numbered entry in the Persona series, Persona 5. Basic preparations for the game’s development have been completed, with the usual staff members in place. That includes Katsura Hashino as director, Shigenori Soejima as character designer, and Shouji Meguro as main composer.

So that’s everything we know so far. What do you wish for in the P4 remake, fighter or P5?

Personally I’d like to see more P3 characters in the fighter other than Aigis. Like the MC, female MC and Akihiko (“I’ve been waiting for this! *smirk*”), it would be totally kickass if they are able to fit everyone from both P3 and P4 in to the roster.

In Persona 5 I think it would be brilliant if the world travel was made seamless – as in a title pops up on the screen if you enter an area but there’s no load time – but of course they still need to give the option of quick travel to different areas too.

Y’know, this past year has been pretty hectic. I’m currently enjoying my first career role in the industry of my choice, and getting paid well too. The only problem is I am now as far away from my home city and friends as I have ever been in my life. As always though, Sloth has been the lifeline to the world back home, an extended umbilical that has faithfully served to deplete my wallet with awesome figures he finds on the ‘net. While before I would ‘uhm’ and ‘ahh’ over buying a figure due to a woeful lack of funds, now I have come to relish his contributions, as more often then not I have the cash to spend on them (much to his chagrin).

Last week was perhaps one of the highlights. Within minutes of receiving a message from Sloth about a 45% discount on a Tomoyo Sakagami figure by Wave, I had purchased her. Within another day, much to my delight, Amiami had shipped Tomoyo out to my address. Within the week she had arrived. How is that for service? Damn, I love the internet!

So lets kick off my first review using our new categorical analysis! Read on after the jump~

1. Execution

For those of you who know, any figure of Tomoyo is a big win for any Clannad fanboy, especially when she is retailing for $50AUD + shipping. For those of you who don’t know, Clannad was a romantic comedy that aired in 2007-2008 and is definitely worth watching if you’re into that kind of thing. For that price one cannot expect too much in terms of quality, and with this being my first figure from Wave, I am happy to say its good. Wave have faithfully taken the original character designs from the anime (and visual novel) and successfully introduced Tomoyo into the 3D realm. The pose is straight out of After Story, and as such more lonely then I would of liked, then again this accurately depicts her character. I guess putting some Sunohara airtime into the picture would of increased the price somewhat, but would of made the figure overall more entertaining.

2. Sculpt 

This is perhaps where the cost factor falls into place. Because Tomoyo is indeed a cheaper figure, there are some areas where this shows. Her socks, for instance, are merely painted on, whereas on more expensive figures there is a lovely bit of interaction between the leg and where the sock ends. I am a big Zettai Ryouiki fan, and while Tomoyo isn’t wearing thigh-highs, this lack of detail is a little disappointing. Happily though, the rest of the paint job is very smooth and has consistent colour.

The actual sculpt of the figure is also pleasing, with no rough edges and very little in the form of blemishes. Besides the shoulder joint on her left arm, WAVE have done well to hide where Tomoyo was stuck together by matching with the seams in her clothing. Also complimenting this is her solid build quality, everything seems very sturdy and hopefully will stand the test of time.

3. Value

I think for the price that I paid for ($50AUD), I have done very well for myself. Sure, this particular figure has very little detail on the uniform, but since this is exactly as depicted in the anime, it makes no difference. The fact that WAVE have not stuffed around with her face and faithfully recreated Tomoyo’s personality in her pose and facial expression means all the fanboy criteria have been satisfied. However, would I pay any more for her? In hindsight, no. There isn’t much else going for WAVE’s Tomoyo and as such she has to rely on the fetishes of those who loved her character.

4. Enjoyment

For this past week, Tomoyo has been center stage on my desk, and I am yet to get tired of her. I am one of those collectors who rarely buys a figure unless the anime or game he/she came from was one I really enjoyed. In this case for me it is the memory that drives the fanboyism; the nostalgia of watching Clannad and the characters therein. I fear that later on she might get delagated to the shelf, but nevertheless I am glad to have her.

Conclusions

I’d recommend this figure to all fans of Clannad, as she is easily justified by her price. I would challenge you to find any other figure from that anime that is, for that price, so faithfully recreated. If you are like me, and constantly hark back to your favourite series of seasons past, then you won’t be dissapointed. Also join me in purchasing Kyou when she comes out later in the year

I was never a fan of swimsuit figures. It’s not that I don’t like how they look, I simply find them pointless. Unless it was officially worn by the character at some point in the original story I firmly believe it adds nothing to the characters and are a waste of money. Well, that was my chain of thought until recently. I remember the first swimsuit figure I’ve ever wanted to own was Alter’s Swimsuit KOSMOS back at the start of 2009, KOSMOS’s phenomenal body and unique swimsuit haunted my dreams for the next few nights. I really did want it but convinced myself otherwise to save money for future buys. Time passed and my want for the figure began to slowly erode from the depth of my consciousness. For a while, I was content with the belief that I had made the right decision. Fast-forward to this year with the market constantly flooded with a slew of Beach Queens figures by Wave I was doing well to hold my ground and repressed my desire to own any of them. Then came GSC’s Seena. From her announcement to her final production my once impenetrable and collected thought was overwhelmed and came to a crashing mess. I never looked at swimsuit figures the same again. I began to want other swimsuit figures that I gave a pass to previously like Konata & Kagami.

So it seems I am finally charmed by Wave’s never-ending beach queens series. It’s almost as if they planned to draw me in with the non-beach themed bra and apple-bottom jeans Asuka to ease the transition in to this adorably frilled skirtini. Biribiri’s radiance really speaks for itself. You can truly see that she is having loads of fun at the beach with her default face. I much prefer the troubled expression on the alternate :s face though, it’s certainly an expression I’ve never seen on a figure before so that’s a big plus! I am almost overloaded by cuteness every time I look at her. Wave deserves a round of applause for a masterful implementation of seam lines in Misaka’s hair, although it could be her hairstyle that makes it possible. There’s one thing I’m a little irked about and that is how thin her thighs are, or maybe how they are positioned. It looks a little too CLAMP from the photos IMO.

With summer approaching, I can see the Beach Queens figures being very “in season” for me. Just as well because I’m already stocking up those instant noodles to free up more mulla to acquire these gems. I’ll dedicate a level or two on the shelves just for the beach goers.

Nanoha Takamachi & Fate Testarossa

It has been quite interesting for the Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha franchise with the recent announcement of two casual clothed girls from the series (+1 mosaiced Fate by Koto). These “casual/plain clothes ver.” figures are a breath of fresh air in the now played-out over-the-top action posed MSLN figures from a number of companies. I think both Kotobukiya and Alter have priced their figures at the right amount. For less than 7000 yen RRP those who find it hard to throw down 10,000+ yen on a MSLN figure can indulge on these cute pancakes without breaking the bank. For those who already have multiple 10,000+ yen MSLN figures will consider this to be a pretty cheap price and probably wouldn’t mind paying that much for a bit of variety in their MSLN collection.

With the difference in price, it’s a personal choice which one you prefer. I know they are two different characters but it’s only a matter of time until they are paired up by the other from the same company. For a little more, alter’s almost guaranteed higher quality at a bigger rated scale will be a justified purchase. On the other hand, Koto’s Nanoha looks well made too. Personally I will be buying neither because there’s no excitement when I look at these figures, I barely feel anything much at all other than – yeah, cute.

Kirino Kousaka (Left, right)

With the announcement AND release date of both figures so close together it is inevitable to draw comparisons between the two. Much like the MSLN figures above, the difference between quality between the two companies should be the biggest consideration. Because even if one may prefer the looks of either, whether or not the company is capable of pulling it off is another story. I am of course talking about Toy’s works’ infamous lack of ability to deliver where it counts. I wouldn’t say they are as terrible as Taki Corporation but they certainly are below Kotobukiya in my books. Releasing a once exclusive figure for mass manufacture without changing much is a great way to piss off those who supported Toy’s works’ “exclusive”. If you bought TW’s ver. at twice the price + shipping from a proxy, I feel for you and understand fully if you so choose to boycott Toy’s works/Chara-ani.

When it comes to aesthetics I think Kotobukiya overshadows Toy’s works again. Given the negligible price difference we have from Koto a figure that will absolutely liven up the space around her no matter where she will be displayed versus TW’s plain looking cute girl doing…nothing. The sheer amount of cheerfulness I feel every time I look at Koto Kirino’s expression accompanied by her wind blown sailor uniform and carefully exposed belly puts a smile on my face.

With that said, I’m surprised by how famous MLSCBTC has become. With the premise of such a generic plot in addition to uninspired characters, I am unable to grasp the reason of its popularity. It’s full of things we have seen so much of already. Tsundere, cute-moe, sailor uniforms etc. Why should one watch MLSCBTC over other moe-blobs/highschool dramas like K-On/Toradora? This unoriginal mix has a lot to do with my hesitation to order Koto’s Kirino. The anime better not turn out to be awesome or I’ll have to eat my words and order Koto’s version.

Ritsu Tainaka

We all saw her coming from a mile away. Alter’s being sneaky with the pricing IMO. Sure it seems like the drums will require a tiny bit more material to make but not 2700 yen more. I can’t shake the feeling that Alter’s trying to cash in on the completionists who were eagerly waiting for her in order to complete the set. I was never a big fan of Ritsu because I think she’s just an annoying side character so it’s very easy for me to say no here.

I can’t imagine Ritsu fans are totally happy with how she turned out either. I’m not fond of how she’s sitting there with her legs symmetrically wide open and holding her sticks up in the air like that. While it gives off some energy there’s no sense of movement and I think Ritsu will agree with me in saying that the drums is ALL about movement. At least make it look like she’s about to do something like how it’s apparent on the rest of the Alter K-On girls. Position her arms so it looks like she’s starting the song with a “one-tsuu-sulee-four” or give her a determined expression with one arm lowered hitting a drum with the other reaching for the high-hat. So much potential existed for Ritsu’s grand entrance, instead we got a “safe” pose with no soul. This is not the Ritsu we all know.

It appears I like to ramble on about matters that are slightly irrelevant to the actual figure under discussion. However, I do believe it serves as good background information to help make aware to you where I’m coming from. I’m interested in what kind of experiences you’ve had with figures: How do you make your purchase decisions? Which one of your figures has the most interesting story about it? Today I’m going to talk about three figures that interests me greatly:

Souryuu Asuka Langley

Origin: Rebuild of Evangelion

Scale: 1/10 (PVC)

It can be argued that Asuka is the definitive tsundere for a lot of people. While there’s no denying that there has been countless figures of Asuka since Evangelion graced the TVs all over the world, I have always found most of them lacklustre in the sense that she is never in character. You would think the never ending cash cow that is NGE would spur up enough competition between the figure manufacturers that her personal traits will be exploited to its full potential – or at least her most dominant one: TSUNDERE. In fact, we rarely see her doing much else than standing idly with an empty expression in her plugsuit or the bland, played out school uniform I’ve come to distain.

However, this sculpt…this Asuka is the personification of all I have ever hoped for in an Asuka figure. Straight off bat Asuka shows her tsundere attitude with her wonderfully presented facial expression of “I-It’s not like I was cooking for you or anything…”. It is so superbly done because it shows both the tsuntsun and deredere sides that are crucial to convey her personality. Then we have the way she’s ever so slightly leaning to one side with her arms locked up in an awkward position behind her. Maybe it’s to hide the injuries on her hands sustained from bringing this sweet aroma to your senses or perhaps to hide her embarrassment, excitement or fear as you become the first to taste her overwhelming love on a plate. Oh my, excuse me while I wipe the drool off my flooded floor.

Wave’s Asuka oozes sex appeal without revealing much at all, at the same time her irresistible cuteness is also always there. Who says naked aprons are the best? I say Asuka aprons are the best. I much prefer the look of her with the apron on but underneath there’s that slender body we’d all risk our lives to protect. There’s so many little details present that shows how much thought was put in to creating this perfect casually dressed Asuka.

The only issues I can see are her scale and quality. On the one hand her size allows for a much cheaper price but it also means she’ll be small compared to the rest of my collection so she may look a little out of place if displayed near them. Wave’s 1/10 line is also not known for top notch quality but the review samples recieved by Moeyo, GAGraphic and AkibaHobby all show great promise. How can one not buy her?

Kyou Fujibayashi

Manufacturer: Kotobukiya

Like many others I have a love-hate relationship with Kotobukiya. I respect them for the variety they bring to the table as a lot of their sculpts are interesting and unique. While I only have a couple of figures by them, all of which I cannot pick out major flaws from, I see from reviews of their other figures that sometimes the final product falls short of a seemingly reachable level of quality that would be expected and delivered by the other big boys such as Alter and GSC. A most recent example would be Chag’s review of Koto’s Hitagi – despite the fact that they chose to tackle an interesting side of her that was different to the other manufacturers there were visible flaws like plastic sheen on legs and sectioning of hair that were not present in preview shots.

I’m a little late to the party as I’ve just recently started watching Clannad and am only up to episode 4. I am enjoying the show and I have yet to see the “gym scene” where this outfit and atmosphere originates. I have to say though, if I needed anymore motivation to keep watching Clannad this would be it. There are just so many things done right here. First and foremost, Kyou with that embarrassed expression is almost begging you to hug her gently and never let go, pleading you to take away all her troubles with a sweet kiss. Add that to a perfectly shaped body in an outfit to show it creates such an alluring yet innocent scene that nobody can refuse. I particularly like the realistic slight arc of her back that won’t require many decades of yoga practice to achieve (I’m looking at you VN02). There may not be a lot of detail on her gym uniform but I think it has great shading, especially that bloomer. The placement of the creases and tonal adjustment of the shading really raises that already epic backside to new levels of awesome. Typical of Kotobukiya, the base is no slouch either, I do think this has become a new standard for all manufacturers so from now on there will rarely be any ugly space wasting “coasters” to place our figures on like in the past.

At 1/6 scale she comes with a price to match. Fans of bigger figures will not be disappointed as Kotobukiya is known to be generous with their figure sizes. It’s a shame that due to my budget restrictions I unfortunately will not be adding her to my buy list just yet but rest assured Risk’s here to save the day as he pre-ordered Kyou the moment I showed her to him.

Diabolus Inclinatus

My google-fu fails me as I am unable to find much on the artist of the illustration this figure is based on, the doujin she originates from and the company that is making her. Apparently, Sousi Hirose drew a doujin named Demon Squeezer (I LOLed) and it was thanks to the cover of that doujin that we are graced with its 3D counterpart. Here’s the only place I could find art of his other than the doujin cover (Although the style seems to vary so I question the legitimacy).

Anyhow, I have to admit that I’ve always shied away from risqué figures but this succubus has me on my knees begging for more. Hokusoh did an amazing job in preserving the original look of the character. I really love the look of, as little as it may be, all that’s on her – I don’t find it boring or out of place. She’s sexy and she knows it but she’s much more tasteful in presenting herself, there’s none of that repulsive skanky and show-off vibe I get from other scantly clad ladies. If anything she looks more like a damsel in distress, one with a very gentle and caring side (that is, until she’s close enough to squeeze your demon). In fact, I’d like to stress the gentleness she exhibits that I find so alluring. Diabolus’ soft and curious expression draws me in despite being surrounded by her fiery coloured hair. The type of horns she was given is also quite ingenious as they don’t look aggressive like ones from characters in Black Rock Shooter, rather, they are curled back resembling that of a harmless sheep.

Nevertheless, because of all the good points above I am overcome with sorrow as there are too many random variables regarding this figure for me to feel comfortable spending that amount of dough. My country of residence forces me to purchase from overseas shops in order to get a decent price on anything figure related almost everything, so with my country’s twisted views on many morally questionable issues I have little confidence that Diabolus will get through customs if the shipment were to be examined. Furthermore Embrace Japan is a new company without any form of track record in terms of production quality so it’s only natural to doubt the final product. If in the future that she becomes highly rated and I find out the packaging does not promote her cost-off features and gorgeous rear then I may gather up the courage to hunt her down. For now, she’ll be but a fleeting dream.

It’s been a long time.

Staying true to my name I could not help but be the indolent sloth that I am. From its inception till this day Shrine of Sloths has met with more neglect than it has love. That’s about to change because despite what it may seem, I always had Shrine of Sloths on the back of my mind. I would regularly conceive blog posts within my idle mind over my many thoughts and ideas but never follow through with them. I know there has been broken promises (both to myself and to others) and much neglect I am positive my return to this precious blog is permanent and I hope to bring quality content to all. Not that this blog currently possesses fame that requires my apologies to the reader(s) I want to at least apologise to my dear friend Risk – my partner in crime – for coming back so late.

Let’s get this party started, shall we?

All this aimless blogging I have been doing in recent months has led to me, just now, to sit back and wonder just what am I doing? Why am I here, dedicating my time? Yes there is a lot of hoohaa fluff in the ‘about’ page, but those words somehow do not capture my personal reasons for blogging, rather they are just carried over cliche’s emulating the millions of other anime blogs online.

It all stems down to the fact that I love figurines. It certainly is not everyone’s piece of cake, and until 2006 I was steadfastly ignorant of the entire anime industry. However, I have now tasted the aforementioned cake and found out that it was actually made of delicious chocolate, laced with every kind of addicting drug known to mankind. I am hooked.

So when Sloth, who force fed the cake (forgive my poor use of analogies) down my throat, coined the idea of starting a blog, I was enthusiastic. Since then I have been fiddling around with reviewing random episodes of anime, a few figures here and there, alot of general stuffing about with no real achievements.

But no more. I realize now that I have lost my way…from this point on, I shall project the word FIGURE from my forehead. With the new addition of  RSS feed aggregators through the AnimeNano  and DannyChoo, I really hope to find fellow figure fans out there, join their community, and share their opinions with mine.

This is what I want to blog about. This is what I want my posts to represent. What better way to end this monologue then with photo’s of a few favorite figures I own so far?

Suzumiya Haruhi by Kotobukiya

I am a big fan of the Suzumiya Haruhi franchise (minus EE), and this example rates a 10 on my epic figure scale. I go by the logic that if any figure you spot online that completely captivates you, then you should do anything in your power to get it.

Yes, I am a Lucky Star fanboy. Have really good memories of this series, and rewatch it often. Recently bought Miyuki, Tsukasa, and Konata to keep Kagami company. Anime Festivals are awesome, you know that? 10/10 on the Epic Figure (s) scale. Figmas, while cheaper then most other figures, are especially fun as you can recreate many fun scenes from the anime. Do NOT discredit them because of their joints, you hardly notice these!!

My unstoppable lurking of the internets never fails to bring me both joy and sadness. In the past few days I have suffered through a combination of unpleasant emotions. The inescapable depression that overwhelms me even now is a mixture of shame, regret, rage and the feeling of utter hopelessness.

Why do we always seek the things we cannot obtain?

Why is it that I still hold out my hand in a miserable attempt to reach the sun even though my wings are burning?

Why is it always something I want SO bad that is out of stock?

I recently discovered something so good it’s almost criminal. These lucky Star X Macross Frontier prize items released by Banpresto brought my world to a standstill:
